with a FREE printable!
Spring is one of the most enjoyable seasons to teach vocabulary in the French classroom. Flowers bloom, animals become active again, and students naturally connect with the themes of nature and new beginnings.
To help introduce or review seasonal vocabulary, I created a free printable French Spring vocabulary poster that you can download and use in your classroom.
The poster features common spring-themed words in French, paired with simple visuals that make the vocabulary easy for students to recognize and remember.
The poster includes the following French spring words:
une fleur – flower
un papillon – butterfly
un oiseau – bird
le soleil – sun
la pluie – rain
un arc-en-ciel – rainbow
une abeille – bee
l’herbe – grass
le vent – wind
une coccinelle – ladybug
un arrosoir – watering can
une pousse – sprout / new plant growth
These words work well with beginner French learners, including:
French 1 students
Core French classes
Elementary FSL students
Vocabulary review for older learners
The visuals make the poster especially helpful for supporting comprehensible input, allowing students to connect meaning to images rather than relying on translation.
Teachers use vocabulary posters in many different ways. Here are a few simple ideas.
Print the poster and display it on your wall or bulletin board during your spring unit. Students will naturally absorb the vocabulary as they see it daily.
Project the poster and introduce the words orally:
Point to each image
Say the word in French
Have students repeat the word
Ask simple questions like “Qu’est-ce que c’est ?”
Students can practice forming simple sentences using the vocabulary:
Je vois une abeille.
Il y a un papillon.
Le soleil brille.
This works especially well for novice learners who are just beginning to produce language.
You can also turn the poster into a quick listening activity:
Ask students to point to the image you say.
Say short phrases such as:
Je vois une fleur.
Regardez l’arc-en-ciel.
Students identify the correct picture.
This builds listening comprehension while reinforcing the vocabulary.
